NHA Honors Police Officer of the Year - 2001
Police officer Darren Choy was honored by the Nob Hill Association at its 73rd Annual Meeting. Named "Police Officer of the Year," Officer Choy was presented an award certificate and a check for $1,000 from the NHA and a generous gift certificate from the Mark Hopkins - Intercontinental Hotel, who hosted this year's meeting. Announcing the award and describing Officer Choy's exemplary service as a member of the police force was Central Station Captain Kevin Patrick Dillon. Obviously moved by the tribute, Officer Choy thanked the more than 200 NHA members and guests present and told of growing up in the neighborhood. To be assigned to Central Station was, for him, just coming home.
Also present to receive a $1,000 donation on behalf of the San Francisco Fire Department was recently named Fire Chief Mario H. Treviņo. Named Chief in August 2001, Chief Treviņo has 29 years of experience in the fire service, having previously been Chief in Las Vegas, Nevada and before that, Deputy Chief in Seattle. Accompanied by an impressive number of San Francisco Fire Fighters, the Chief thanked the Association for its contribution and announced that $500 of the donation would be sent to the New York Fire Fighters Relief Fund as a gesture of solidarity following the tragic events of September 11. The other $500 would go, as usual, to support the San Francisco Fire Fighters Toy Program. Also present was Melissa Lerma, Director of the Toy Program.
As always, the meeting was followed by a cocktail reception hosted by the NHA and the Mark Hopkins where the many members and guests had the opportunity to wish each other a happy holiday season.

Fountain of the Tortoises Rededicated - 2001
The holiday season on The Hill is kicked off when the Mayor of San Francisco throws the switch lighting the trees on Huntington Park. Named after Dorothy Fritz Cope (Dolly to her friends), whose family's generosity made it possible, the annual event attracts neighbors and visitors who delight in the carols of the San Francisco Girls Chorus and the spectacle of the lighting.
The highlight of this year's Tree Lighting Program was the rededication of the Fountain of the Tortoises, a two year, $500,000 project spearheaded by Huntington Park Committee Chairman Dan Finnane. In honoring Dan for his many contributions to the beautification of Huntington Park and the entire neighborhood, Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed it Dan Finnane Day in San Francisco.
Following the activities in the Park, the Association gave a "Thank You" reception honoring the major donors to the park projects in the beautifully renovated Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel.
