BIGGEST CROWD EVER FOR TREE LIGHTING - 2002

It seemed more like fall than winter for the official kickoff to the holiday season this year. Several hundred people, residents and non residents alike, gathered for the annual Dorothy Fritz Cope Tree Lighting Ceremony in Huntington Park.

Continuing the custom, the San Francisco Girls Chorus performed holiday songs as many in the crowd sang along. At 6 pm sharp, Mayor Willie Brown threw the giant switch lighting all the trees in the park.

NEW FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR AWARD PRESENTED AT ANNUAL MEETING - 2002

This year's Annual Meeting of the Nob Hill Association saw the initiation of what will become an annual tradition: the presentation of the Firefighter of the Year Award. Receiving the first Award were SFFD Para-medics Robert Miller and Kjell Harshman in recognition of their exemplary efforts in responding to the emergency call which resulted in the timely and life saving treatment administered to former NHA President Robert Varni who had suffered a severe heart attack. Presenting the Award was Fire Department Chief Mario Treviño who thanked the Association for recognizing the hard work of San Francisco's firefighters and para-medics.

The Annual Meeting was also the occasion for the recognition of the San Francisco Police Officer of the Year. Presenting this year's award to Officer Vince Neeson was the newly appointed Commanding Officer of Central Police Station, Captain Stephen Tacchini. Officer Neeson was awarded the prestigious honor not only for the insight and dedication that he brings to his job on a daily basis but for numerous exceptional personal acts that make him stand apart, stated Captain Tacchini.

Following the business portion of the meeting, the members were invited to attend a lavish cocktail - buffet offered by the NHA and the Fairmont Hotel in the newly redesigned Crown Room atop the Hotel. Members and guests dined on lobster claws, mini crab cakes, seared New Zealand baby lamb chops, three types of pasta with delicious assorted sauces, spanakopita, assorted cheeses and grilled vegetables, an assortment of French pastries and desserts, topped off by premium beverages for all tastes. Many members felt that this year's was the "best Annual Meeting ever!"

FALL SOCIALS KEEP NHA MEMBERS BUSY - 2002

Two very special events honoring members of the Nob Hill Association kept members busy in September. The Grand Opening of the new BeauCoup Restaurant and Saloon was one, and a private reception at the Crown Room of the Fairmont Hotel was the other.

Located at 1001 California Street at the top of Nob Hill, the new BeauCoup Restaurant and Saloon opened its doors for the first time to more than 400 NHA members. Guests dined on sumptuous hors d'oeuvres and enjoyed fine wines, spirits and champagne. The décor of the new Nob Hill eatery reminded some of the turn of the century Belle Époque while others thought it more reminiscent the America's Wild West.

The second fall social was hosted by General Manager Mark Huntley in the Crown Room atop the famed Fairmont Hotel. Nob Hill Association members were invited to enjoy the breathtaking views from the 51st story private salon, which alternated with the rolling fog, while enjoying food and beverages served by the Fairmont's fine staff.

PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ - 2002

It was a full house for the fourth annual Puttin' on the Ritz June 24 benefiting the Nob Hill Foundation. Guests dined on seared haddock filet on artichoke and fava beans barigoule followed by veal medallions wrapped in pancetta with pearl couscous and spring vegetables. Dinner was followed by the music and songs of entertainer Ed Davin. As there was no designated dance floor, many guests got up and danced where they were. Chair and creator of the event, Bella Farrow said: "People were literally dancing in the aisles!"

A special thank you goes to co-chair Sylvia Clough as well as to the staff of the Ritz Carlton who took care that everything went smoothly. Nancy Hamon of Dallas Texas was overheard saying: "I wouldn't miss this party for anything!" That pretty much summed up the mood.

NOB HILL TOASTS THE CALIFORNIA MILLE - 2002

The worlds of sleek vintage sports cars, gourmet food and fine wine converged under a warm, bright sun Sunday May 12 to celebrate the 12th annual California Mille, which features rare sports racing cars dating from 1927 to 1957. Highlighting this year's entries was a 1951 Ferrari 340 America whose owners have included race car driver Signor Sebastiani of Rome and Sydney Chaplin, son of Charlie Chaplin.

Sponsored by The Fairmont San Francisco, the outdoor reception showcased 70 one-of-a-kind sports racing and production cars from around the world. Patterned after the world-famous Italian Mille Miglia, the California Mille is a four-day, 1000 mile tour through Northern California.

Legendary racecar driver Mario Andretti, who watched the Mille Miglia as a boy in Italy, was on hand to delight the crowd by telling stories of racing, posing for pictures and even serving his award-winning Andretti wines.

The event benefited the Nob Hill Foundation which serves to preserve the beauty and history of Nob Hill and Huntington Park. Many thanks go to our event Chair, Bella Farrow, and to her Co-chairs: Martin Swig, Sylvia Clough and Mark Huntley. Thanks also go to Mark Huntley and Kirk Bjorkman and the entire staff of the Fairmont Horel who did an outstanding job providing delicious food and friendly staff assuring us of a successful event.

NHA Sponsors Fire Safety Program - 2002

Recognizing the dangers from fires unique to high rise buildings, the Nob Hill Association, in cooperation with the San Francisco Fire Department, sponsored a neighborhood meeting on the causes and methods of prevention of fires in condominium and other high rise buildings. More than 100 members of the public attended the "powerpoint" and film presentation led by Lieutenant Fernando Juarez of the SFPD and held on May 7 in Gresham Hall at Grace Cathedral.

The program was introduced by Fire Department Chief Mario Treviño who thanked the Association for sponsoring the evening and pointed out the importance of each resident having a basic knowledge of fire causes and prevention. Also participating was San Francisco Fire Marshal Gary P. Massetani. All Fire Department officials stayed throughout the evening and responded to questions from the audience.
