HOLIDAY SPIRIT NOT DAMPENED BY WIND AND RAIN
For the second year in a row, the annual Dorothy Fritz Cope Tree Lighting Ceremony was forced in doors due to high rains and wind. But when "in doors" means relocating into the splendor of Grace Cathedral, not a single one of the some 250 participants complained. Under the superb direction of Elizabeth Avakian and the masterful accompaniment of pianist Douglas Franks, the San Francisco Girls Chorus entertained the assembled members and guests with a beautiful melody of holiday favorites. Dean Alan Jones welcomed everyone to Nob Hill's most famous landmark and NHA president Elisa Stephens thanked everyone for braving the weather to participate in this annual event that marks the beginning of the holiday season in San Francisco. Presiding for the first time, Mayor Gavin Newsom, under the watchful eye of San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, threw the giant switch illuminating the trees in Huntington Park. Happy Holidays to Everyone!

San Francisco's Brass Show Up for 2004 Annual Meeting
For the first time, both the Chief of Police and the Chief of the San Francisco Fire Department were on hand for the Association's 2004 Annual Meeting held at the Stanford Court Hotel. San Francisco Chief of Police Heather Fong beamed proudly as Central Station Captain Steve Tacchini presented the NHA's Police Officer of the Year award to Officer Paul Doherty. SFFD Chief Joanne Hayes-White presented the Association's Firefighter of the Year award to paramedic Captain Pete Howes. She also thanked the Association for its efforts to beautify the Jones Street Pumphouse and promised the active participation of the Fire Department in the project.
NHA President Elisa Stephens reported to the members on the "State of Nob Hill." She reported that the Association continues to fulfill its principal mission which is the preservation and beautification of Nob Hill. She cited exterior renovation of the Jones Street Pumphouse and the new design and efforts to upgrade the children's playground as but two examples.
Following the business portion of the meeting, everyone moved into the India room of the Stanford Court where General Manager Chris Steuri and his terrific staff served the finest in food and beverages. Chef Alfonso Ochoa offered a wonderful selection of delicious pasta dishes with assorted sauces, mushrooms, veggies and other add-ons. There was a separate cheese and desert table loaded with tasty selections. And each end of the room had a full bar and friendly staff. Thanks Chris for making the 2004 Annual Meeting one of the best ever.

A PACKED PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ 2004
The Puttin' on the Ritz has firmly established itself as the biggest and the best social event of the year on "the Hill." Over 270 Nob Hill Association members and friends, 100 more than last year, crowded into the grand ballroom of the fabulous Ritz Carlton Hotel to show off their finery and catch up on everyone's summer activities. Cocktail hour was particularly "spirited" with the addition this year of a gin bar provided by Damrak Gin which complemented the Belvedere Vodka bar and the fine champagne and wines served by the Ritz Carlton staff.
Under the guidance of Executive Chef Jean-Pierre Dubray aided by Sommelier Stephane Lacroix guests were treated to a superb four course dinner complemented by perfect wines. The meal began with a roasted halibut medallion accompanied by Swiss chard, almond and morels with beef jus. A main course of beef tenderloin with bone marrow, herb crust in cabernet reduction was preceded by a salad of bibb lettuce with papaya, fennel and mushrooms. It was all topped off with a dessert of almond biscuit, cherries compote and kirsch ice cream. Entertainment was provided throughout the evening by pianist Allen Choy. Dinner was followed by "Cabaret at The Ritz" featuring vocalist John McCullough.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Nob Hill Foundation whose mission is to preserve the beauty and the history of Huntington Park and Nob Hill. This fifth annual Puttin' on the Ritz was chaired by the incomparable Bella Farrow and co-chaired by Sylvia Clough, both of whom we owe our continuing gratitude and admiration. Special thanks also go out to the excellent staff of the Ritz Carlton: Ken Mady, General Manager, Angela Jackson and Barry Peterson.

CALIFORNIA MILLE 2004 THE BEST EVER
Just when you think an event can't get any better, one comes along to blow your sox off. Such was the case on Sunday April 25 when several hundred car enthusiasts and other pleasure seekers got together under a warm, sunny sky to celebrate the 14th annual California Mille hosted by the Fairmont San Francisco and benefiting the Nob Hill Foundation. This year counted some 50 vintage and classic sports cars made from 1928 to 1961, and for the first time, cars were placed throughout Huntington Park.
Other than the really old cars, all the rest headed out from the Fairmont the next day, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and traveling to Mendocino, Ferndale, Redding and then to Nevada's Incline Village before the tour ends in Sonoma. The drivers are properly fêted along the way and this year the "race" ended at John Traina's 1840s Rutherford vineyard where he and vintner Clarke Swanson hosted a lunch for everyone.
The local version of Italy's famous Mille Miglia was founded by Martin Swig, who along with his wife Esta, could be seen in their 1928 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Zagato Spider. This annual event was chaired by Bella Farrow and co-chaired by Swig, Sylvia Clough and Mark Huntley, all of whom worked their booties off to assure that everyone had a good time. And we did!
