BEAUTIFUL WEATHER REIGNS OVER HOLIDAY CEREMONY
After two years of rain and wind, the annual Dolly Fritz Cope Tree Lighting Ceremony in Huntington Park was blessed with clear skies and dry weather. It might have been a bit frisky, but that didn’t stop several hundred neighbors and friends from attending the yearly tradition atop Nob Hill. The Huntington Hotel provided hot chocolate to keep everyone’s hands and tummies warm. This year, thanks to the vision of NHA President Catherine MacMillan and the contacts of NHA board member Gregory Cheng, a musical trio entertained the crowd both before and after the tree lighting. With Nolan Gasser on piano, Roger Glenn on the marimbas and flute and Bob Steele on the double bass, the assembled group was treated to a concert of exceptional quality. And as has become tradition, the San Francisco Girls Chorus, under the direction of Elizabeth Avakian, sang holiday carols to everyone’s delight. Dean Alan Jones of Grace Cathedral gave an ecumenical invocation and Catherine MacMillan made moving remarks in tribute to her father, Newton Cope, who had passed away just days earlier and had played such an important role in the life and history of Nob Hill. As Mayor Newsom was still in China celebrating the 25th anniversary of the San Francisco – Shanghai Sister City agreement, the giant switch illuminating the trees was thrown this year by the new general manager of the Recreation and Parks Department, Yomi Agunbiade, with the help of SF Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White. Then it was back to the music.

HUGH CROWD ATTENDS ANNUAL MEETING
The largest crowd anyone could remember turned out for this year’s annual meeting, held at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. More than 300 Association members watched attentively as the new Captain of Central Police Station, Captain James Dudley presented the Association’s Police Officer of the Year to two deserving SFPD officers, Mario De Fina and Martin Garay. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White was present to present the Firefighter of the year award to Firefighter-Paramedic Patrick D’Arcy and also to recognize the SFFD Toy Program Coordinator Sally Casazza. Each award carries a sizable cash stipend as well as a beautiful framed certificate. Alan Jones, now celebrating his 20th year as Dean of Grace Cathedral, was on hand to accept a contribution from the Association to the stained glass lighting project at the Cathedral.
Catherine MacMillan, completing her first year as President of the NHA, gave the traditional “State of Nob Hill” address. Noting that the Association has been in existence now for 77 years, she spoke of the progress that has been made in the last year to improve the Nob Hill neighborhood by beautification of Huntington Park and improvements made to the Jones Street Tank Project. She commended NHA board member Fran Hildebrand on her initiative to develop and preserve the archives of Nob Hill and invited all members and guests to search their own files for photos and records relevant to the history of Nob Hill.
Following the meeting, a sumptuous buffet and bar was graciously provided by the management and staff of the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Chef Luis Matinez presided over the pasta buffet with aplomb and charm. A special thanks to everyone who helped make the annual meeting 2005 one of the best ever!

A FESTIVE CALIFORNIA MILLE 2005
Nob Hill once again fêted the California Mille. This 15th annual affair celebrating vintage sports racing cars and their drivers took place under a bright sun and pleasant temperatures. Neighbors and visitors alike wondered among the rare sports racing and production cars dating from 1927 through 1957 that lined Mason Street and were throughout Huntington Park. The tour is patterned after the world-famous Italian Mille Miglia, a 1000 mile open road race which ran from 1927 through 1957 from Brescia in the North of Italy to Rome and back. It was revived in 1982 as an annual event and, today, the California Mille is the only American event recognized by the Mille Miglia Storica (Historical Society) of Brescia, Italy.
A sumptuous Italian Buffet, complete with Champagne, wine and cocktails was provided by the Fairmont Hotel under the watchful eye of its new General Manager Francisco Gomez. As always, the event was chaired by Bella Farrow with the able assistance of co-chairs Sylvia Clough, Lois Lehrman, Martin Swig and Francisco Gomez.

UNIVERSITY CLUB HOSTS SPRING SOCIAL
University Club General Manager Desmond Elder and his staff truly outdid themselves recently in hosting a
spring social for the members of the Nob Hill Association. Held in the Club House overlooking the skyline of
San Francisco, members munched on an extensive variety of hot hors d'oeuvres while catching up on each others'
activities and sipping of red and white wines. Club food and beverage director, John Nicolai, provided a beautiful
layout of cheeses and fruits in one end of the Club House while staff members passed hot chicken on skewers, cheese puffs,
crab cakes and other delectables throughout the group. Special thanks go to them and, as always, to event chair
Bella Farrow and co-chair Sylvia Clough.
